This Friday 12 members traveled to Laos (aka. the Thunderbird's Boys &
Girls Club). These members experienced six different areas in the
Club, all focused on a different aspect of the country. In the Art
Room members were handed Molding Magic (a Crayola product) and were
asked to make Buddha statues. We teased our palate with food in
the Learning Center; the first dish was chicken with rice and for
dessert we had bugs on a stick (a Laotian delicacy) - in this case it
was Gummy Worms. Out on the patio we learned about the art of
Yoga. The kids learned the proper breathing technique while posing
in the dog, child, sun, tree, and lotus positions. The Buddha
Garden was set up in the Power Hour room, where members were read tales
and given the history of Buddhism. The "Laying Buddha" can be
found in this garden. It measures over 60 feet in length.
The members watched a movie in the Computer Lab. The movie showed
the Laotian markets, spoke about the living conditions, and told us
about all the destruction the country encountered after the Vietnam war.
Laos in the most heavily bombed nation in the world. Live shells
litter the country side, where people, unknowingly, use them to build
homes and structures in villages. Finally, the kids competed for
prizes in the Learning Center. Members played a game that
resembled that of Pick-up-Sticks and also tried their hand at a marble
game.
